3D Minimap, Landscapes, Items, User Interface

Hey, it's been a busy week and I will try to answer your questions tomorrow. Here is what I just added:

Minimap:
In the top right you see now a 3D minimap which turns as you turn the camera. It consists of tiles which become visible while you explore the world. On the minimap you can see boss creatures (like trolls) as skulls. Boss creatures will be very hard to kill but also drop rare loot like strong weapons or armor. In the future I will also add quest givers and other stuff to the minimap. I also plan to add a big world map where you can also see the locations of bosses, towns, quests and so on.

Landscapes:
To make exploration more interesting, the world now consists of uniquely named landscapes. The names are generated as a random combination of syllables. Depending on the properties of the ground and the vegetation, each landscape has an additional name like 'Hills', 'Mountains', 'Beach', 'Ocean' etc.

Items:
There are now lootable items, both dropped by monsters and growing in the landscapes (like mushrooms). Currently I have just basic items like chest armor, gloves and boots, but I will add different types like steel armor, bone armor, crystal swords and different herbs, vegetables, ingredients etc.

User Interface:
In the lower right you can see a context window which shows you information about an item. On the top there is a quick bar which allows you to use items like potions via hotkeys. In the bottom left you can open your inventory and equipment window.

Here are the new screenshots:

wow love it really nice. but its weird in Alura hills, and why dose your mace not show up in hot bar

wollay said...

The hotbar is just for consumable items like mushrooms or potions. The mace is in the second item from the left in the inventory window.

what is as someone have said alura hills? :P By the way epic news :D

wollay said...

You mean the minimap looks weird? That's because this tile still has to be uncovered. I think you will see it better in the next video.

What kind of computer will this game need to run smoothly?

Anonymous said...

wow im seriosly stupid theres a picture where the map is called alura hills. Smart ass me O.o btw epic how they have diffrent names :)

Anonymous said...

A minimap that is shaped from the surrounding area? Glorious.

Opinion; let us have a option were we can change the size of the minimap. Some people are picky with this.

You are doing a good work and you are awesome.

Anonymous said...

Great job man. Cool new pictures and the minimap is completly awesome!, but it says your weapons have diffrent levels, can we upgrade our weapons or do they gain exp or are they just diffrent lvls from the start or how does it work?

shut up and take my money

First of all, your game looks really great and I like what you're doing, but what makes me really excited are your inspirations.
I'd really like to see something like the chargesystem of Secret of Mana and item stats like in World of Warcraft.

This is shaping up to look really fantastic, I've been reading and following since before you changed the engine. I'm very excited for this title, I'll even review it on my Tech Blog once it's released to the masses and endorse you via our Twitter and Facebook Pages.

I'm very excited for this. I love minecraft and Cube World is shaping up to surpass it at this rate. As it's already been asked, is this going to be free-to-play or not, as I'm can't really pay using online transactions.

Also, suggestion here, perhaps a animation for diving or even falling from certain heights would be a very cool addition. Other than that, I eagerly await the release (and or alpha)

Anyone else noticed the amazing draw distance?
Look at that extremely distant tree in the 4th screenshot ;)

Hey Wollay. Game's looking amazing. I'm worried that the game wont run on a 5770. Could you tell me if it's good enough? Or will I have to upgrade. (Christmas coming up so I'm broke at the moment)

Anonymous said...

This is simply amazing.
I can't believe how quickly you are getting these new features made.

Wont you please make a video soon where you perhaps explain all the new stuff? So cool game keep it up man :)

Thanks for your comments!

"let us have a option were we can change the size of the minimap."

Good point, I'll add zoom buttons.

"it says your weapons have diffrent levels, can we upgrade our weapons or do they gain exp or are they just diffrent lvls from the start or how does it work?"

- Each weapon and armor has an item level. The higher the level the better the item.
- Higher level monsters drop higher level items.
- Item levels don't increase automatically.
- You either have to find better weapons/armor or you can upgrade your weapon/armor with certain materials.
- I will make a new post about the item system soon.

"I'd really like to see something like the chargesystem of Secret of Mana and item stats like in World of Warcraft."

I also like charge attacks and will probably add some. As item stats I'm planning to add stamina (or HP), strength, agility, intelligence.

"I just want to know if the game will cost something, and if it will how many?"

Yes but I don't know yet how much.

"I'm worried that the game wont run on a 5770. Could you tell me if it's good enough?"

I think it will be good enough. It ran smoothly on my five year old iMac which had a Radeon 2600. On my new PC with a GTX580 it runs with 200-400 fps at max settings. Maybe you will have to lower the draw distance of the landscape and the details. I also want the game to run on lower end systems and will do some testing on my laptops in the future.

"There will be translations in different languages?"

If the game gets successful, yes.

"Wont you please make a video soon where you perhaps explain all the new stuff?"

Maybe next week.

Can you bind weapons to hot key like(1,2,3,4,ect)
And dose armor make a physical or noticeable change on the character.

:) that's probably the most awesome mini map i seen to date
*keeps throwing money at the screen*

you should add geomancing if you decide to add magic spells. Like make trees and hills rise out of the ground!

Anonymous said...

Will this game run on mac?

skully172 said...

awesome.. i cant wait to play this game

Anonymous said...

"If the game gets successful, yes."

Wollay, are you kidding? The game looks better than any AAA title that came out this year, and you're working on it alone. If it doesn't get the attention it deserves, I'll most definitely spread the word about the game.

Also from what I can tell, you're an amazing developer. So that's always a plus. I've been trying to learn a coding language thanks to you. I'm only learning C at the moment, but I was hoping that it'll help me learn C++ at a later time.

Anonymous said...

"If the game gets successful, yes."

please your kidding with me, this is gonna be the best game ever. it just deserves more attention and people to spread the word about it. So cool game cant wait to play it. Looks so amazing :) I look foward to kill crabs with my friends and explore big dungeons <3

This game looks amazing!!!!

First comment here....I want to say that this game looks very promising and inspiring in many ways (specially because of the fact that you are doing it alone!)...Im buying this for sure when it comes out...

_______________

I have just 3 questions for you, I hope you can answer.
As a developer myself, Im impressed of how fluid the game looks and performs(as far as I can see)...so:

- What programing language/s is the game being developed with?
- Are you using a specific SDK for your work? (the voxel sprite editor included)
- For the engine, u used raw opengl/d3d libraries or some pre-tweaked library? (I know many of these, but I cant decide on one to start with :/)

Thx in advance

Are you going to have item stats randomized to make potentially unlimited weapons and armour or will they all be premades? if it will be randomized you could use the same system you use to name the places in game to name the rare items. e.g. two handed sword of (combination of syllables)

Also have to thought about adding some kind of particle effects or shines to the really rare stuff?

TRGWII said...

jsgnextortex, i think he is writing it in C++, and developed his own voxel game engine...

I really like your work and am definitely going to get this as soon as it comes out, i wanted to know : Will you be releasing this to steam? O will it be from a Website of your choice? Great job, I look forward to this release!

wolfgang784 said...

Vince steam does not allow often updates. So unless he is going to finish the entire game before releasing it and then updating it every few months it couldn't go on steam.

Thats why another fun indie game, project zomboid, was not allowed on steam. They update the game every month or so, at least before this large update right now. Thats also one of the reasons Minecraft was now allowed on steam, although Notch doesn't like steam much either I am pretty sure he said.

Anonymous said...

@wolfgang784-

That's completely untrue. Dungeon defenders is constantly updated. So is Terraria, Sanctum, Orcs Must Die and obviously TF2/L4D2.

luxrayfly said...

I can't wait a release

Anonymous said...

@wolfgang784 I've seen many steam games updating every day. And I've read on some indie developpers twitter that they like steam because they can update whenever they like.

Hey its Lordlucas7 here and i wanted to let you know that your game is now also know in Australia. Also i would love it if you made some form of a building mechanism, i know you don't want mining but diffidently building i am so looking forward to a Mini - Beta, maybe in 2 weeks or so a beta for the first 100 people? Anyway thanks.

Hey, wollay, just wanna say, don't feel overly pressured by what everyone is asking you for. Adding too many half thought out ideas never turns out well. Look at minecraft.

Just make a game that you would play. Everything you'd implemented so far looks great and I'm really looking forward to the finish project. Take your time. Make sure it lives up to YOUR expectations. When you can truly say that this is the game of your dreams and you created it is when you've made a perfect game.

Love, Dennys

Game is replic minecraft, very cool :D

Firetiger778 said...

amazing work on this game i hope there will be a closed/open beta or something like that just don't rush the game we want it to be good and it's own game not a copy of something but it's own name and title and all that if you need testers you could always make a page for applications and they post it in and if they have the requriments you let them have it and play.

Anonymous said...

Your game is so cool! It's still better than Minecraft and the other games you inspired.
Will there exist a blocking attack for protect you from the monsters? Will there exist a shield?
Please make new videos. This game is such a good idea...

Anonymous said...

I hope the game can be used texturepacks? I feel bad idea to abandon the texture on the blocks.

Anonymous said...

It reminds me of The Elder Scrolls + Random + Multiplayer. HAVE to get my hands on this one :D

very nice looking game.good job. You might consider to try to put it on a disk so people can play it on ps3 or Xbox. Just an idea but if that was the case I would definitely buy it because its just that good
